InterAACT Language Framework

The interaction of language and technology

Ask the fundamental questions…
What is the best way to represent language on an AAC device? Does one method work for all communicators? If not, how can we possibly determine which methods are effective, given the many communication factors to consider, the broad array of devices, and the wide variety of communicators’ needs and preferences?

…and InterAACT answers.
Finding answers to these critical questions is what DynaVox is all about. Our goal is to help people who use AAC devices to communicate faster and more spontaneously. We do that by merging language with technology through an approach we call InterAACT.

Identifying vocabulary and structure.
DynaVox uses the InterAACT framework to support functional communication and literacy development by providing a vocabulary and structure that is appropriate for a communicator’s age and ability, as well as the context or setting of the interaction.

We strive for continuity across devices while anticipating an individual’s chronological and communicative growth. In fact, InterAACT “grows” with the communicator.

Overarching principles.
InterAACT is a language framework established by DynaVox to accomplish two goals. First, the framework provides a method for organizing and developing targeted content, symbols, and access methods appropriate for clearly defined groups of augmented communicators. Second, the framework supports augmented communicators’ functional communication, as well as language and literacy development.

Visualizing communication complexities.
One component of the InterAACT framework is a visual communication spectrum that functions as a planning, organization, and analysis tool. One area of the spectrum is divided into discrete age groups. These groups are further broken down along a continuum of communication ability comprised of functional (emergent), situational (context-dependent), and independent (creative) areas.

We then use the visual spectrum to organize specific vocabulary, page sets, symbols, and standard features appropriate for each age group on the spectrum.

Methodology meets application.
By using this InterAACT framework and applying the results to DynaVox software and hardware, we support communication in specific environments and contexts like no other company in the industry. We identify the need for features like Visual Scenes, My Phrases, and Quickfires, which enhance faster and more spontaneous communication and expression, and implement them on our real-world devices.

InterAACT contributes to the design of consistent elements on all page sets, which is important for both continuity and growth:

  • Language use elements, such as Quickfires, Slots, and My Phrases
  • Language structure elements, such as core words and dictionaries
  • Physical structure and layout, such as standard page templates
  • User interface framework through personalized digital images

The last word in AAC.
InterAACT is a way of looking at language systems and applying the results to create technological solutions for augmented communicators. It reduces the learning demands on young children and simplifies customization of device features. It enables the right communication at the right time. InterAACT enhances the quality of assistive and augmentative communication for all who use it to interact.
