Communication Solutions for Stroke Survivors
Speech after a stroke can be both frustrating and challenging. If you or a family member are living with the effects of stroke that have made speech difficult, or if you are a professional who works with these individuals, a speech-generating device (SGD) may provide a solution. Here is information to get you started on the path of exploring the possibilities.
What is a speech-generating device?
A speech device is a form of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) that allows a user to type or select a series of words or icons and convert this input into oral communication. Users interact with the device using a touch screen, switch, head or eye-tracking system, depending on the level of motor control.

Who is a candidate for a speech-generating device?
Stroke can cause damage to the portions of the brain that are responsible for language. This can result in disorder call aphasia. Aphasia may impair the expression or understanding of language as well as reading and writing. If following a stroke a person has difficulty with verbal articulation as a result of their aphasia, either on a temporary or permanent basis, a speech generating device may provide a solution.

Who can help determine if a speech-generating device will provide a solution? A speech language pathologist (SLP) knowledgeable in AAC is the professional to consult. They will be able to perform an evaluation to determine if a speech-generating device is appropriate and which device will best meet the specific needs of the communicator.
